Photos: Vietnam – Di An, 1965 to 1966 (by Blair Smoulder)
This pressure land mine was buried in a pull off area beside the road. My jeep straddled it. When I, Lt Smoulder, moved out, a Cat 12 road grader pulled in and set it off. Luckily, nobody was hurt.
It had a name, maybe Old Betsey. We scrounged it! Photo is circa May1966 & was taken at Di An by Blair Smoulder. To its right is a water trailer made from two empty 500lb bomb containers.
Lt Chuck Humphrey, 3rd Plt Ldr. Winning hearts and minds.
Lt Blair Smoulder, Recon officer HHQ Co and then 2nd Plt Ldr C Co.
A number of volley ball violations by Lt Sam Griffin. We played volleyball after supper most evenings while at the Di An base camp (headquarters of the First Infantry Division, about 20 miles north of Saigon). Photo is circa May1966.
Lt Frank D’orsi, E Co, took a shot at crossing before the site was complete. He got a tow.
